LEAD efforts to expand the impact of BMDC.

The BMDC drives innovation, entrepreneurship, and medtech education to address grand challenges in healthcare. Bakken Medical Device Center Director and IEM Innovation Lead (with Faculty Rank) 

The BMDC Director will be a visionary leader who:

  1. enables and facilitates translational engineering science and research, development and application of novel medical devices, systems, and technologies,
  2. promotes and facilitates the commercialization of new medical technology generated by clinicians and engineers at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities and M Health Fairview,
  3. engages with local, national, and global medical technology industries to promote technology and innovation collaborations and talent development, and
  4. facilitates the training of the next generation of medical technology innovators at the interface between the clinic and engineering.     

The position:

  • is an annually renewable, 12-month academic administrative appointment
  • is a 9- or 12-month faculty position
  • will begin July 1, 2023, or as soon as possible thereafter

Terms and conditions:

  • including the percent of appointment (50%-100%) are negotiable depending upon prior commitments and responsibilities of the selected candidate.
  • We are seeking exceptional candidates with significant career accomplishments in medical devices and related fields; we welcome applications from individuals with academic, industry, or government backgrounds. 
  • The position will be responsible for strategic oversight of program activities and operations, including developing a sustainable business model, leading fundraising efforts, and engaging a diverse range of medical technology business stakeholders as clients and partners.
  • Our community ranges broadly from world class faculty and students to esteemed alumni and dynamic administrators, and includes some of the world's most successful leaders in bioengineering technology and business. 

This position has a dual reporting line to the Director of the Institute for Engineering in Medicine (IEM) and the College of Science and Engineering (CSE) Dean. There are several large endowments that support this position and the BMDC. Directors with faculty credentials are eligible for appointment to a faculty position at the rank of professor or associate professor in one or both of the colleges (CSE or the Medical School).

Job Duties

Earl E. Bakken Medical Devices Center

  1. Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of programs. Oversee analysis, reporting, and program improvements. Oversee the development, adherence to, and implementation of program policies and procedures.
  2. Build and expand engagement with BMDC and IEM Innovation Pillar stakeholders, including UMN entities (the Medical School, CSE, and numerous institutes and centers), industry partners, and non-profit and government entities. 
  3. With appropriate consultation, lead strategic planning that outlines goals, metrics, and outcomes for BMDC. 
  4. Prepare, prioritize, and monitor budget requests and expenditures for BMDC. 
  5. Assist in the planning and execution of the new BMDC space in the new Health Discovery Hub (HDH), scheduled to open September 2025, in alignment with the mission and purpose of the HDH.
  6. Represent the entity or program to the broader university, external community, and other stakeholders. Provide expert consultation related to program development, funding opportunities, or other specialty areas.
  7. Develop outreach strategies related to program communications, development, partnerships and fundraising/funding. Identify external funding opportunities and write proposals and research grants. Develop and oversee strategic financial planning and sustainability for the program/entity, as needed; monitor performance and ensure appropriate controls.
  8. Develop a new focus in digital and connected healthcare, along with the associated data science, that aligns with HDH goals. 
  9. Continually tie programmatic decisions and milestones to longer term vision and goals of the Center and adapt as needed.
  10. Establish and cultivate key relationships both internal to the university and external throughout the industry and community for mutual benefit.
  11. Ensure the Center will continue to offer programs which help students gain entrepreneurial mindsets, solve complex problems, and launch new ventures.


Innovation Pillar (within IEM)

The IEM Innovation Pillar aims to provide leadership and opportunities in technology-based medical innovation both within academia and in collaboration with industry. We will continue to grow medical technology education, translational research, and commercialization at the University of Minnesota extending out to the biomedical business ecosystem. The work of the Innovation Pillar is in alignment with the MPact 2025 vision for forward-thinking innovation at the University of Minnesota.

  1. Help craft the IEM strategic plan that outlines goals, metrics, and outcomes for the Innovation Pillar within IEM.
  2. Prepare, prioritize, and monitor budget requests and expenditures for the Innovation Pillar.
  3. Participate in program and event coordination meetings with the IEM Director, IEM Leadership, and IEM staff.
  4. Participate in IEM meetings as the representative of the IEM Innovation Pillar and BMDC (Annual Conference, SAB, IAB, etc.). See:  Innovation Week and Annual Meeting links.
  5. Coordinate activities and programs of BMDC and the Innovation Pillar with activities and programs of other IEM Pillars.


Institutional Commitment

The Bakken Medical Device Center resides within the Institute for Engineering in Medicine. The Director of the IEM and the Deans of CSE and the Medical School have committed to the following:

  1. Matched annual budget of $600k/year ($300k each from CSE & Medical School).
  2. Space: The Bakken Medical Device Center (currently 7000 square feet in Mayo Building and equivalent space now being planned in the Health Discovery Hub: (HDH). 
  3. Endowment:  Several major endowments ($5 – 10M) are being negotiated and are expected to support the BMDC Director and the BMDC.



  • A PhD and/or MD is required, however, consideration will be given to industry leaders in medical technology who possess at least a Master’s degree in business, finance, or related field. 
  • Must meet the requirements for holding a faculty rank position at the University of Minnesota, including a record of distinguished scholarly, research and/or translational activity that will be the basis for a faculty position in a CSE or Medical School department. 
  • Teaching and Research experience with demonstrated track record of achievement in both areas.
  • Previous experience in medical technology innovation (patents, product development, awards).
  • Previous experience in medical innovation and leadership of medical innovation teams. 
  • Proven record of achievement in leadership and the ability to develop and describe a vision in alignment with the organization’s goals and policies.
  • Record of publications in the field in peer-reviewed academic journals.
  • Evidence of ability to pursue and obtain competitive funding.
  • Demonstrated commitment to advancing and promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion among faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, academic administrators, and higher education partners.



  • Organizational management and program development experience.
  • Knowledge/experience with academic technology.
  • Tenured faculty member or similar level of accomplishment and rank in relevant positions in government or the private sector. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to influence and motivate constituencies, which could span multiple organizational boundaries.

About the Department

College of Science and Engineering 

Few colleges match CSE’s  breadth and depth of research capabilities, its track record, and continued potential for impact. 

The second largest college at the U of MN  (after the College of Liberal Arts), CSE has a long tradition of discovering solutions to the world’s most pressing issues while pursuing excellence across a broad range of disciplines. The college began in 1935 as the Institute of Technology, bringing together programs in engineering, mining, architecture, and chemistry. It quickly established scholarly distinction, as faculty drove world-changing breakthroughs in science and engineering and multiple alumni went on to win Nobel Prizes. It evolved to incorporate the U of MN School of Mathematics and departments of Geology and Astronomy in the 1960s, added a department of computer science in 1970, and biomedical engineering in 2000. 

Renamed the College of Science and Engineering in 2010, it currently includes 12 academic departments encompassing the physical sciences, engineering, mathematics, and computer science. Its departments offer a wide range of degree programs at the baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral levels, and include programs that consistently rank among the very best in the nation. CSE’s Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Math, and Mechanical Engineering programs each place among the top 20 in their fields in US News & World Report (USN&WR). In the National Research Council’s (NRC) most recent rankings of PhD programs, nearly half of CSE programs ranked in the upper 10% of their respective peer groups.
