Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be on-site, or can I work remotely?
We meet on site every week so you will need to be in the Twin Cities. In recent years, individuals have commuted every week from Rochester, Minnesota to participate.

We can provide assigned office space at the Bakken MDC for the Fellows.

Can I conceive solutions based on software, AI, drug delivery, mobile apps, or unique business models?
Absolutely! We seek the most elegant solution to address a target unmet need.

Do I need to bring a technology idea to the IFP?
No. Most project teams start with an unmet clinical need and then conceive a variety of potential solutions to that need before focusing on one solution. We are open to helping Fellows consider their existing ideas or other UMN technologies among the potential solutions.

What sorts of clinicians can apply?
Any type. We have trained dentists, audiologists, nurses, physical therapists, veterinarians, and physicians. Clinicians with at least 2 years of residency training can apply. It’s common for clinicians to join us after their residency for a year, as they interview for their clinical fellowships.

We will consider clinicians without residency training if they bring other relevant work experience (e.g. work as an engineer, patent agent, entrepreneur).

I am not a clinician, scientist, or engineer. Can I still apply?
Yes, if you bring relevant industry experience.

Do you provide compensation and healthcare benefits for Fellows?
No, our program is a part-time program where trainees hold full-time jobs that provide compensation and benefits. Our training model is akin to an executive MBA program where individuals learn while holding full time employment.

Can we license any inventions we develop through the IFP?
Yes! The UMN is keen to support Fellows in their entrepreneurial endeavors. Past Fellows have typically executed an exclusive option to license their inventions, with a defined period to further diligence their idea before electing to execute a license agreement.

I have questions that have not been answered by the website. How can I get those questions answered?
